I have a rule about clicking links in emails.

Don't do it. Ever. Especially if the email claims my package can't be delivered or my bank account is compromised or a Nigerian prince needs my help. That rule has served me well for twenty years of internet use. Zero viruses. Zero scams. Zero regrets.

So when I tell you I clicked a link in an email from someone I hadn't spoken to in five years, you'll understand how desperate I must have been.

The email came on a Wednesday afternoon. Subject line: "Remember this?" Sender: Mark Thompson, my college roommate. We'd lost touch after graduation like everyone does. Life happens. People drift. No hard feelings, just distance.

The email had no message. Just a link and a photo attached. The photo was from sophomore year—me and Mark at some party, both ridiculous, both young, both convinced we'd be friends forever. I stared at it for a minute. We looked so happy. So sure of everything.

I don't know what made me click the link. Nostalgia, maybe. Curiosity. The vague hope that Mark wanted to reconnect and this was his weird way of doing it.

The link took me to a page I didn't recognize. Bright colors. Games everywhere. It took me a second to realize it was an online casino. I almost closed it immediately—scams, obviously—but something made me pause. The design was professional. Clean. Not the sketchy pop-up filled mess I'd expected.

I scrolled through the page. Read the about section. Checked the licensing info at the bottom. It all seemed legitimate. I wondered if Mark had sent this by accident. Or maybe he played here? Maybe this was his way of saying "hey, check this out"?

I texted him: "Did you mean to send me a casino link?"

His reply came five minutes later: "Haha yeah. I play there sometimes. Thought you might like it. Good for killing time."

I stared at the message. Mark and I hadn't talked in five years, and he was sending me casino recommendations? Strange. But also kind of nice? Like he still thought about me. Still remembered I existed.

I decided to visit the official Vavada website properly. Not just the link, but the real site. See what it was about.

The lobby was bright and busy. Games everywhere. Slots with every theme imaginable. Table games. Live dealers. It felt like stepping into another world, one with color and sound and movement. Exactly what my boring Wednesday needed.

I deposited twenty bucks. That's two beers I wouldn't drink. I told myself if I lost it in ten minutes, fine. At least I'd have ten minutes of something different.

I started on slots. Kept it simple. Found one with a Greek mythology theme—Zeus, lightning bolts, all that. I bet small, fifty cents a spin, and just watched the reels turn. Win a little here, lose a little there. The minutes passed. Three o'clock became three-thirty. Three-thirty became four. My brain stopped thinking about college and old friends and the weird passage of time. It was just... present.

Around four-thirty, I switched to live dealer blackjack. This was different. Real person, real cards, streaming from somewhere. The dealer was a woman with a Spanish accent and kind eyes. She welcomed me to the table. Asked how my day was going. I didn't type anything back, but I appreciated being asked.

I played for an hour. Won some, lost some. My balance stayed steady around twenty-five bucks. Nothing exciting. But I was having fun. Actually having fun on a Wednesday afternoon.

Then, at five-thirty, something shifted.

I don't know what it was. Different dealer? Different cards? I started winning. Not big wins—five here, ten there—but consistently. Hand after hand. My balance crept up. Thirty. Fifty. Seventy. I remember thinking, this is weird. I'm not doing anything special. The cards are just falling my way.

By six, I was up two hundred dollars. Two hundred from twenty. In my apartment, on my couch, on a Wednesday that started like every other Wednesday.

I kept playing. Not because I needed more, but because I was curious. How long could this last?

The wave kept going. Two fifty. Three hundred. Three fifty. I wasn't betting big—five, ten dollars a hand—but every hand seemed to land in my favor. Doubles hit. Blackjacks appeared. The dealer kept showing me cards that worked.

At seven, I hit four hundred. Four hundred and thirty-two dollars, actually. I stared at the screen. Then I texted Mark: "Dude. Four hundred bucks."

His reply came fast: "NO WAY. Told you. That site is lucky."

I laughed. Actually laughed out loud in my apartment. Four hundred dollars from a random email from an old friend.

I cashed out right there. Didn't play one more hand. Didn't try for four fifty. Just hit withdraw and watched the confirmation load.

The money hit my account on Friday. Four hundred and thirty-two dollars. I used some of it to book a flight to see Mark. First time in five years. We're meeting next month. Grabbing beers. Catching up. Being stupid together again like we were in that photo.

I still think about that Wednesday sometimes. The way a random email changed everything. The way an old friend reached out in the strangest way possible. The way four hundred dollars became a plane ticket back to someone I'd lost.

I play occasionally now. Not often. Just when Wednesdays get slow or I'm thinking about Mark. I deposit twenty, play for an hour, usually lose it. That's fine. I'm not chasing that four-hundred-dollar night. I'm chasing the feeling of connection. The reminder that people from your past can still show up in your present.

Mark and I text more now. Not every day, but more than once every five years. He sends me stupid links. I send him stupid links. We're planning our next visit. It's nice. It's normal. It's exactly what I didn't know I was missing.

Last week, he texted me a new link. Different site this time. Said he'd been playing there lately. I texted back: "You trying to make me rich?"

He replied: "Trying to make sure we have something to talk about when you visit."

I smiled. Put my phone down. Looked forward to next month.

That's the thing about websites you never meant to find. Sometimes they lead you back to people you never meant to lose.
